What is the Occupational English Test?

The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language test for healthcare professionals – it is not a test of your medical knowledge. The examination assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English in a healthcare context. This differs from other forms of English language examination like the IELTS. Find out more about the difference between OET and IELTS.

The exam preparation course with BSC helps you build the skills you need to become more confident when working in healthcare in the UK and Ireland.

What is in the OET exam?

  • There are four parts of the test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
  • Each part of the test assesses your understanding of English in a workplace-related healthcare context.
  • The speaking and writing sub-tests are specific to your profession.
  • Build the skills you need to help you become more confident when working in healthcare in the UK and Ireland.

Who is the test for?

The exam is designed for 12 different healthcare professions. The Listening and Reading subtests can be on any profession.

It’s an English language test, not a test of your medical knowledge. The Speaking and Writing subtests are specific to your profession.

Who accepts the OET exam?

The OET is recognised by healthcare councils, governments and universities in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Singapore, Namibia, and Ukraine.

In the UK, you can use your result when applying to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Medical Council (GMC). Recognition for OET continues to grow around the world and, most recently, it was announced that OET will now be accepted when applying to medical school at Imperial College London. Read more about who recognises OET.

What level of English do I need to do an OET course in the UK?

The minimum requirement for the course is B2 (note: if you are borderline, we recommend joining an online general English class to build your language skills before joining the OET preparation course). Find out more about the different levels of English.
