Studying and Working? Here’s How To Manage Your Time

Adult learners who juggle several responsibilities in life, such as academic education, career, and family, are finding it tough to manage their time. For university students, time management is critical since the capacity to prioritise is essential to maintaining a happy and balanced lifestyle. Good time management has numerous benefits that will enrich you, your friends, and your family. While some students would prefer not to work while pursuing their education, a large number of students work full-time while pursuing a degree. There are a variety of reasons behind this, but the most important factor is- financial security.

Studies, employment, and personal life are the three main aspects of a student's life that take up the majority of their time. Both studying and working can eat up a lot of time, leaving little time for personal needs. This is one of the most significant problems that students confront. So, how do you strike a balance between school, employment, and personal life?

Balancing Work and Studies: Here's how it's done!

1. The power of a to-do list

A "to-do" list acts as a reminder of the things that must be completed first. Emphasise the most crucial tasks. Post the list somewhere visible and accessible, for as on a bulletin board, refrigerator, calendar, mirror, Post-It notes, or your phone! Remember to include personal errands, family responsibilities - and some well deserved “me-time”.

2. Don’t multitask - even if you think you’re good at it

Some prefer it - in fact, some swear by it!. However, the problem with multitasking is that it consumes more of your energy than usual and, in many cases, it’s proven that it actually ends up taking more time to finish those individual tasks. The best way to complete a task is to finish it and then move to another one. Taking breaks is of course ok, as you don’t want to drain out all your energy - but, try not to do everything at the same time.

3. Keep your employer in the loop

Assure your employers that you can manage both your work - and study schedule! It is also a way to get their attention, and they consider you to be really eager to work for them. If possible, sacrifice holidays and breaks to show seriousness about your job. Never study on your employer's time - so make sure that your schedule is bullet-proof!  If you prove your dedication, it will be easy to negotiate a more study-friendly schedule with them.

4. Take care of your health

For students, (especially those who work a full-time job as well), a well-balanced diet is essential. Studying, particularly during exams, can consume a lot of energy, so proper nourishment is an important component of a student's life.

5. Identify your study method

Determine the most efficient times and places for you to study and work. Knowing your study style will help you be a more efficient and effective student, whether you study at home with music playing in the background or silently in the library.

Many students wonder if working and studying at the same time is a smart idea. However, there are numerous advantages to working and learning at the same time. It instils confidence in students by allowing them to have complete control over their resources. At the same time, the qualification you are pursuing will offer you a leg up in your career development - particularly if you’re learning to master the art of the English language!

What are the benefits of studying and working at the same time?

  • Financial security through a consistent income
  • Provides students with a sense of independence and maturity
  • Nurturing your soft skills
  • Gaining valuable work experience at a young age

Like most things in life, the work is so much sweeter when there is a reward - so take the time to reward yourself along the way!

When you've fulfilled your goals, it's good to treat yourself every now and then. This will help you stay motivated by giving you something to anticipate. Only if you plan your life correctly can you study while working and enjoy the life balance it gives. It’s crucial for students to maintain the right attitude and approach in order to realise the benefits of working while learning.
